Past Programs
In 2008, the SLWDC Board of Directors decided to start offering programs to students. Two programs were designed, the "Kid's Night at the Museum" for the spring and the Mandalay Nature Trail Adventure for the fall. The "Kid's Night at the Museum" was offered, but the Mandalay Nature Trail was canceled due to damage at the trail from Hurricane Gustav.
Kid's Night at the Museum
In February 2008 the Center hosted the “Kids Night at the Museum”event. The event was made possible by a grant from JPMorgan Chase. It was attended by 24 students from grades 5 - 7. The students broke up into groups and rotated through different activities related to the effects of pollution on the environment and ways to combat it. Each groups’s results were shared and the similarities and differences between the results were discussed. The event ended with the showing of “Night at the Museum.” As a result of the event, the students gained a deeper appreciation of the wetlands and the different ways pollution affects it as well as an awareness about the present
condition of the wetlands.
