Upcoming Events

Each year the Center holds three fund raising events.  The Center participates in the Lady Bug Ball event and then presents its Annual Secret Garden Tour.   Also this year, the SLWDC will offer a "Running of the Ducks" community event.

Mandalay Trail Event

The event will be a wetlands learning activity for middle school students. The students will travel to the Mandalay Nature Trail which exemplifies the fauna and flora indigenous to the area. The trail will provide examples of freshwater habitats which can be explored. The students will travel back to the Folklife Culture Center where guest speakers will be available to help the students identify the flora and fauna sampled from the trail. Leaf presses will be used so that identified flora can be preserved to be used in the classrooms of middle schools to share with other students.   The trail event is scheduled for the Spring of 2009.  The event is made possible through a grant from JP Morgan Chase.

2009 Lady Bug Ball

Each year the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center participants the annual "Lady Bug Ball" sponsored by RE/MAX Real Estate.  The portion of the proceeds the Center receives is used to send teachers to the SECME Summer Institute.  This year the Lady Bug Ball will be Saturday April 25 at Southdown Plantation.  If you would like to become a sponsor for the Center's booths, fill out the sponsorship form and mail it back with your sponsorship to address on the form.

2009 "Secret" Garden Tour

Join us for the 2009 Secret Garden Tour held in cooperation with the Terrebonne Garden Club to benefit the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center.  The events offers the community a chance to tour some of Houma's best private gardens and learn how different plants thrive in our wetlands environment.  This year the garden tour consists of 6 gardens throughout the Houma area and will be Saturday May 16 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.  The funds raised from the event go toward the operational expenses of the Center.

Check back for ticket locations and a map to the gardens.

Summer Camp

The summer camp will be for students age 11-14 and is scheduled for the last week of July 2009.

2009 "Running of the Ducks"

The "Running of the Ducks" event will held in October 2009 during the weekend of the Voice of the Wetlands Festival.  A couple of days before the festival, the Center will offer a night of unique dishes cooked by local chefs.  The dishes will be composed of only food found in the wetlands. There will be a silent and live auction as well as the opportunity for guests to purchase "Ducks" for the "Running of the Ducks" which will be held on Saturday during the festival.
