"Wetlands Explorer" Summer Camp

This five day summer camp gave campers an introduction to the wetlands and issues related to it.  Each morning campers went on a field trip to an exciting wetlands venue to gain real world hands-on knowledge and then returned to the Terrebonne Folklife Culture Center to discuss their experiences and undertake other fun wetlands activities.

They carried out a scavenger hunt at the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum and conducted a water sampling experiment on the bank of Bayou Terrebonne. In the afternoon, the campers conducted an oil spill experiment to determine which absorbent worked the best. On Tuesday, they traveled to the Audubon Insectarium water samplingto learn about the insects which live in the wetlands. The campers went on a tour at the USDA Sugarcane Research Station to learn about how science is working to improve the area’s sugarcane industry and returned to the Folklife to conduct a sugar crystal experiment and participate in a Bottle Fish project. On Thursday, they traveled to T. Baker Smith and Sons, Inc. to learn about surveying in the wetlands and the different wetlands careers available. The camp ended with a "Cajun Man's Swmap Cruise" with Mr. Black Guidry. The cruise brought the campers through a fresh water wetlands environment which showcased the flora and fauna that call the wetlands home. In the afternoon, the campers performed the commercials they had worked on all week. The commercials could be about anything the campers wanted as long as it related to the wetlands.  Campers left with various wetlands information and activities. The 5 day camp was from Monday June 7 through Friday June 11.

Activities were led by science teachers from H.L. Bourgeois High School, St. Bernadette Elementary, and St. Francis de Sales Elementary.

This camp was made possible by a grant from Wal-Mart Westside and sponsorships from Apache Corporation, Mr. David Elmore, Restore or Retreat, Inc., Rouses's Supermarket, Magnum Mud Equipment Co., Inc., and Berwick and Alexis Duval.
