"Wetlands Conservationist" Summer Camp
This five day summer camp offered advanced lessons for campers from the "Wetlands Explorer" camp. Campers guideed through a more intensive investigation into the wetlands and issues related to it. Each morning campers went on field trips to exciting wetlands venues to gain real world hands-on knowledge and then returned to the Terrebonne Folklife Culture Center to discuss their experiences and undertake other fun wetlands activities.
They met with Reggie Dupre, Director of the Terrebonne Conservation and Levee District, to tour the Parish’s levee system and learn about the proposed Morganza to the Gulf system of levees and locks. In the afternoon, the campers conducted a watershed activity. A del
ta was built and water was poured to simulate the effects of a new river being formed. They also did a crawfish dissection experiment where different parts of the crawfish were identified and discussed. The campers traveled to New Orleans on Tuesday to spend the day at the Audubon Nature Institute conducting a scavenger hunt at the Zoo and the Aquarium of the Americas. On Wednesday, they traveled to the Wildlife Gardens in Gibson and to learn about the flora and fauna indegious to the area. The campers also participated in a microbiology lab presented by Professor Angie Corbin of Nicholls State University. The Department of Wildlfe and Fisheries offered a boating safety class on Thursday. At the completion of the class each camper was certified in boating safety. The camp ended with a mock trial in Judge Randy Bethancourt's court room. The trial was entitled the Wetlands of Louisiana vs. Manmade and Natural Disasters. The campers had to learn about proper trial procedures, find evidence to support both sides of the trial, and assign each camper a part and then develop that part of the trial. Campers left with various wetlands information and activities. The 5-day camp was scheduled from Monday June 21 through Friday June 25.
Activities were led by science teachers from H.L. Bourgeois High School, St. Bernadette Elementary, and St. Francis de Sales Elementary.
This camp was made possible by a grant from Sam's Club and sponsorships from Apache Corporation, Restore or Retreat, Inc., Rouse's Supermarket, Synergy Bank, Magnum Mud Equipment Co., Inc., and Berwick and Alexis Duval.
